Dracula (Piramis)

TRACK #445:

Dracula by Piramis

We continue our international Dracula tour with this curious Monster Rocker from from 1980. And what better band to sing about Dracula than the biggest rock band in Hungary’s history, Piramis.

No joke either. These dudes were absolutely massive in Hungary. In fact, their hits are still among the most played songs on Hungarian airwaves. They’re like The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Led Zeppelin all rolled into one over there. Except, instead of whatever that might combo might sound like,  they all got forged into one proggy, Sabbathy pyramid, which (as it happens) is what Piramis means in German (oddly enough.)

In fact, their very inception is a direct result of their founding bassist, Som Lajos, seeing Sabbath in the early 70’s and saying “yeah, I wanna do that.” And the influence is palpable, such as it is with most any hard rock band formed in Sabbath’s wide wake.

Formed in ‘74, Dracula comes from a bit further in their career, when the band took on some experimental influences, but it’s no less rocking. A heavy riff, some sinister synth lines and a weird ass Dracula voice becoming of a band from Bela Lugosi’s neck of the woods.

It’s a creepy monster jam that’s so perfect for The Shindig it’s insane to me that it’s taken 444 songs to get it here.

So, kick back with the biggest band ever to come outta Hungary, singing about the biggest Monster to ever come out of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Here’s Piramis and Dracula.
