The Night / Samhain

TRACK #449:

The Night / Samhain by Halloween

Would you believe there was another band called Halloween? I mean, you might, just cause you knew that already or because you’ve got an iron clad memory for Halloween Shindig posts from like 3 years ago. But they were a funk band in the 70’s that didn’t cut one song even remotely adjacent to the holiday, strangely enough.

We’re not talking about those guys though. We’re talking about yet another, different,  band called Halloween. Another Heavy Metal band called Halloween, even. They were Italian and thank the many forces of the season, cause they even cut a song called Samhain.

Formed in 1981, lasting about 6 years and producing only a handful of demos and one EP, Halloween didn’t leave a deep footprint. While tonight’s song comes from that EP, 1985’s L.A.D.Y., it had existed in the band’s repertoire as far back as their first demo in 1982.

The EP version features a lead-in intro called The Night, which blends seamlessly with the song and suits it perfectly. Though the band had somewhat changed their sound by 1985, this version did not adopt that change and remains largely identical to the original demo cut. By this point, Halloween had shifted from their NWOBHM roots to a decidedly more Glam Rock vibe, but thankfully Samhain made it out unglitzed.

The ‘85 version maintains the song’s original heft while providing a much more polished recording. I’m glad I didn’t have to choose between a poor mix or a lesser version of the tune. It was quite the contrary, in fact, as (despite their similarities) I do prefer this version of the track.

There’s not too much info out there about these paisans, but I did come across this Dutch article on heavymetalrarities.com

Now, in the likely event you don’t speak Dutch, I had some dubious online translator give us the goods. It seems most of this is just about them trying to fuck groupies. Hell, it almost reads like an open call letter for groupies to attend the shows. It’s kinda wild.

“HALLOWEEN: S E X (!) Club

Now that HELLOWEEN is causing such a stir, it might be useful to discuss their namesake as well, to avoid confusion. Actually, everything about this group can be summed up in three words: SEX, SEX and SEX.

In Italy, they’re known for their sex shows featuring lots of underwear (women’s, that is, of course!). HALLOWEEN was founded by Ronnie SEX (there it is again) Angel (bass & vocals); the other members are Chris Mor- billo (there’s that word “bil” again!—lead guitar) and the new drummer John Car.

Their songs were well-received by the audience, so HALLOWEEN went into the studio to record a 4-track demo, which garnered them even more popularity with the press. Their demo also reached high on the charts. The band then received many offers to open for a Fan Sex Club.

In Padua, HALLOWEEN performed for a wildly enthusiastic crowd, who welcomed them in an extraordinary way (all the women were shaking their butts!). Shortly thereafter, “VI-KINGS” was chosen by Rockerilla to appear on the H/M Eruption compilation LP. In 1985, plans were made to record a mini-LP, which was scheduled to be released at the end of spring.

A few of the new songs are “L.A.D.Y.”, “BACK-STAGE GIRL”, “NO-BODY (can do it better) and “GIRLS BOARDING SCHOOL.” I suspect these speak for themselves! (Just to mention, these songs have a typical L.A. sound.)

For the girls among us, here’s another tip from the group : every pretty girl gets a backstage pass so they can get a taste of the band after the show! There’s always a hot party with beautiful girls organized:

“THE GIRLS WANT TO FUCK THE BAND, AND THE BAND WANTS TO GET LAID”:

You may be the hot type—and that’s great—but you shouldn’t go overboard. Oh well, I guess it’s just a matter of desire and taste, right..

For more information, to get in touch (in any sense of the word), or anything else (ahem), write to the address below. Who knows, maybe they don’t deliver to your home! Kandi-dates?

Wicked Kelly”

OK, well. There you have it, I guess. Wicked Kelly out there in the streets doing some real flirty fishing with this article. Damn. Is this just cause 80’s, or Italy or maybe both? Either way, it’s pretty direct.

With that out of the way, let us welcome – on Devil’s Night no less (as introduced by an insane preacher from Chicago dressed up like The Devil) – not only another band called Halloween, but another Heavy Metal band called Halloween with another heavy metal song about Halloween. Here’s The Night/Samhain!

Now go throw some cabbage, ya weens!
